Today I did a really fun podcast with Mark from wordpress goldmine about my adventures in outsourcing…. It was pretty awesome if I do say so myself .

I will be getting together a report to go with the call, so that I can go into more detail about it, and I did sit down and start writing it, but it just kept getting longer and longer and longer. It was CRAZY!!! So I have asked over at wordpress goldmine what people want to know about hiring an outsourcer, and I am calling on my readers here to comment… what do you want to know about outsourcing and I will base my report on those questions…

In the meantime listen to the podcast

And here are some basics to get you started.

Replacemyself.com is a super valuable resource for getting started with outsourcing to the Philippines. It is not super cheap at $97 a month, but I would say that you only need it for about 1 or 2 months to get started. Jon Jonas provides a ton of valuable information about Philippino culture and hiring practices. His training for “your people” is also good, but I prefer to train my own folks, so I didn’t keep going with the program. But for initial start up it is quite good, and their support is awesome.

I also have my outsourcer post a lot of content to postrunner (for backlinks), which is part of the Keyword Academy. The Keyword Academy has some top notch training as well, but postrunner is why I stay there. It is a network of around 600 blogs that you can “guest post” on. All of the blogs are privately owned and all content that goes on them must be original. Because of this I have found that posting to this network results in rankings increases pretty quickly.

My strategy is to look at what I am ranking on page two for and post 3 to 5 posts with that anchor text as the backlink. I have found that this usually results in a front page ranking within 1 to 2 weeks of the posts being approved. You can get access to postrunner by joining the keyword academy. The link to postrunner is on the right hand side of the members area about halfway down. They just lowered their price to 33 dollars a month (quite a bargain) and still have a FREE trial to join.

Click here to get the FREE trial and access to postrunner through keyword academy.

I think that is is for now. I wanted to make sure I gave you the links for the places I talked about in the conference call. I will be posting more on this subject, especially when my kids get back into school, and I have a bit more time to work.

This weekend I got to do something really fun. I got to go on a camp out with my lovely younger daughter, Kendra, and spend a bunch of time with the other Girl Scout moms in my troop. It was a dark and stormy night (literally), but we still had a great time and a load of fun.

But to go on this trip I had to have half of Friday off and all of Saturday. This isn’t a big deal for most people, but I used to be a retail manager, so it is a huge big deal for me. In my former job I had to work every Friday and Saturday. Now I can give myself the time off. I am so thankful that I get to earn money online, because it lets me keep my time expenditures in line with my values.

So back to camping… when we arrived it was pouring. Which wouldn’t be a problem, but this is a troop of Brownies (2nd graders) on their first campout, and we wanted them to want to go camping again. We had to think on our feet and fast. Thankfully the Girl Scout camp was flexible and let us change our plans last minute.

We got to stay in this fabulous lodge where we threw mattresses on the floor and had one giant slumber party. It was pretty cool. It was also an awesome time with my kiddo. So after chopping and cooking and hiking and building fires, I am pretty tired. But I am happy, my time is spent in line with my values and what I think is important and working online makes that work for me.

The last two months I have seen tremendous growth in my business. My daily adsense income has grown from about 8 dollars a day to about 16 dollars a day on average, which I am tickled pink about, and I am starting to see $20 days more and more regularly. I often walk around the house doing the happy dance!!! But sometimes I also walk around with a pit in the bottom of my stomach. Why? Because making money on your own terms is kind of scary, and learning how to win the mental game is a big part of this business. It takes skill and determination that is for sure.

In fact, I would say that the number one reason people quit when trying to make money online is because they can’t beat the inner voices (and sometimes their friends and families voices) that tell them that they can’t do it. They try one site or two and don’t make any money, and then they get discouraged and decide to call it quits. There have been many times that I have been almost at this point myself, but I didn’t quit and boy am I glad now, because I am finally starting to see results. So what is the difference between me and the thousands of people who don’t make it in this business? I think there are several things:

#1. Your WHY has to be strong enough.

A long time ago I used to sell Amway products, and although I didn’t like all the travel or some of the other things involved in that business model, I learned one really important thing about starting a business and being your own boss. You have to have a reason that will motivate you when you don’t feel like doing the work. For me, this is about my kids. I used to be a retail manager and loved what I did, then my husband and I adopted our daughters and my priorities changed overnight. It was no longer OK with me that I worked two evenings a week and every Saturday. I had a BURNING desire to get out of the rat race, so I could be home with my kids when they got home from school.

What is your burning desire? If you don’t know then stop what you are doing right now and figure it out. Without it, it is hard to put in the time to make your business happen.

#2. You must be willing to deal with skepticism from your friends and family.

I’ve been working at my business for about 2 and a half years now, and while I’ve made some money that whole time, a lot of the time I’ve been working through the learning curve, and haven’t had a ton to show for my efforts. That is OK by me, and thankfully my wonderful husband believes in me, but other people think I sit at home and play on the computer all day.

I don’t blame people for being skeptical. There are a lot of scams out there, and to succeed online you must be willing to wade through the garbage to get to the good stuff, but there is also a TON of opportunity for those who are willing to work at it (gasp… I said the four letter “w” word).

Are you willing to put up with raised eyebrows and people totally not understanding what you do? If not, then this is not the right business for you, and that is perfectly OK. It just means there is more room for me to succeed.

#3. You must be willing to actually work (and then actually work).

Winning online takes a great deal of time, effort, and some investment. That being said it takes far less time, effort, and investment than running a brick and mortar business. But if you want to succeed you have to do the work.

What does this mean? Well it is different for different people, and I can only speak for myself. For me though, I get up every day and get my kids off to school and then I sit down and write, or do keyword research, or put up new webistes. I work with a colleague and toss around ideas. I put in time and effort into my business every single day to make it grow.

That being said, I also get to live the lifestyle I want to live. Most days I stay in my pajamas till noon, I am home after school with my kids, and when I go on vacation over Memorial Day my business will keep on ticking and earning me money, even though I am not around. So for me the work is so worth it.

Are you willing to put in the work… at least 1 or 2 hours a day to start? If so, you can build a business that will pay dividends for years to come. If not, that is OK. You can watch TV and I will put in the work.

These are the things I think it takes to win the mental game of making a living online. If you think you have what it takes, but aren’t sure where to start, come join me at wordpress goldmine. Mark is a far better teacher than I am, and it is the best place I know of online to get the support and info you need to succeed, and right now you can use the above link for a $1 trial to start. That is my commercial for the day….
