What is Niche Marketing?

When I first started my internet marketing career, I found all ot the terms and abbreviations of my new industry to be confusing!   

I had only ever heard of niche markets in passing before, and I didn’t really understand how they applied to internet marketing and making money online.   Here I will answer the question "What is a niche market?"

Simply put, a niche market is any market that targets a specific group of customers .  For example, online Amazon targets broad markets, and an online store like Tiger Direct targets a niche market (people who want electronics cheap).

Now for the purpose of a single individual starting an online career, Tiger Direct’s niche is still too big of a niche for most people to start out with.  Let’s break down some of the subnices that Tiger Direct targets.

When I look at their website, I come up iwth several subniches that I could target as an internet marketer.

#1. HDTVs – this is a hot niche right now because of the changover to HD broadcasting in February.

#2. Memory sticks

#3. External harddrives.  To back up all the family pictures and music downloads.

#4. Ultraportable laptops.  For those of us who are sick of battery life of 1 hour.

#5. Digital Cameras.

If you look around Tiger Directs website, I’m sure that you can identify many more niches.  Each of these subcategories allows you as an internet marketer to target a specific group of people at a specific buying stage.  

When you target a specific audience, you are able to meet their needs (if you do proper research), and this will result in more sales for you.
